Sclerotherapy treats varicose and spider veins
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment procedure that treats varicose veins and spider veins. The procedure involves injecting chemicals called as sclerosing agents into damaged veins. Additionally, it reduces pain or side effects caused by damaged veins. Generally, more common in women than in men, varicose veins cause itching pain, discoloration etc. Comparatively, spider veins are smaller and less severe. Commonly, the areas affected are your legs and feet. The veins may look swollen, discoloured or raised. Few runs deep under your skin and can cause discomfort. Depending on the size of the damaged veins, sclerotherapy can treat varicose and spider veins in thighs, feet, ankles, calves, anus, etc.
Usually, the procedure ranges from 15 minutes to an hour, given the severity of the condition. If you are getting it on your legs, you may have to lie on your back with your legs raised. They physician may use an ultrasound therapy, as part of procedure, depending on how deep the damaged vein is. The procedure starts with the doctor cleaning the skin around the damaged veins. The doctor injects a needle with sclerosing agent into the damaged vein. The agent can be polidocanol, sodium tetradecyl sulfate, hypertonic saline solutions, etc. The liquid or foam solutions shuts the walls of the injected vein. The blood gets redirected to unaffected veins. With time, your body absorbs the damaged vein, thus making it less visible and unconformable.
Sclerotherapy does not require hospitalization or general anaesthesia. The risks are few and the process is safe, in general. The treatment has a high success rate. You will likely go back to your normal routine the same day after treatment. The pain is bearable and does not last for long. The procedure is highly effective in reducing ugly varicose veins, reticular veins or spider veins. It is a cosmetic procedure requiring less of medical equipment.
